“Being Miss World, you are basically a symbol of fundraising. You are there to inspire people, to show them what’s going on in the world.”

It’s hard to think of first Filipina Miss World Megan Lynne Young as anything else but perfectly suited for the job.
For instance, the reigning Miss World was nothing but gracious throughout this hour-long interview, despite the fact that she has yet to eat her breakfast. Not a hair was out of place, even if there was no style team hovering around her making sure that everything was perfect. As passionately as she talked about the places she’s been and the role she now plays, she was constantly a picture of poise and composure.
ON HER PLANS DURING HER REIGN:
‘I want to get Filipinos involved with my duties so not only do they see what I do, but they appreciate what Miss World does. I also want to encourage people to do something. It’s not just all talk, it’s what you do.’
More from her interview under the cut.
ON BEING INTIMIDATING: I think at some point I may have intimidated some people at the pageant kasi I’m very frank. I like helping people out but it does not come off the right way. I could be like, ‘Hindi maayos ‘yung eye shadow mo, blend mo pa nga.’
ON THE EDGE OF FILIPINAS IN PAGEANTS: I think it’s the determination that when we want something, we work hard for it. Fight lang ng fight! Bahala na if people will try to bring me down. I’m going to show them who’s boss. We have that attitude.’
JOURNEY TO THE CROWN — Photos show Megan (clockwise from top left) during the pre-pageant show of Miss World Philippines; being crowned as the first Filipina Miss World; at her victory parade in Makati City; with President Noynoy Aquino; packing relief goods at the Philippine Red Cross; and visiting patients at a hospital in Olongapo.
SCB: What do you plan to do after your reign?
MLY: To be honest, I don’t really know which path I will take after because there’s so much that can happen. And there’s so much I want to do in terms of show business. I could go in front or behind the scenes. Wherever opportunity takes me, that’s where I will go.
